At-Home Euthanasia and End-of-Life Services

Service Description

At Peace Love Vet, we offer compassionate end-of-life celebrations (euthanasia) either in the comfort of your home or at our holistic clinic in Lewisburg, PA. This service allows you to say goodbye to your beloved pet in a peaceful, private setting, free from the stress of a car ride and a sterile hospital environment.

Not sure if it’s time yet? You can schedule an end-of-life consult with Dr. Gabby to discuss whether it’s time to help your pet pass peacefully, or explore treatment options that may improve their quality of life for as long as possible. Back and forth emailing to help you decide is not available, must set up consult for this as we cannot assess over email.

We provide a gentle, humane euthanasia for pets of all sizes—dogs, cats, and exotics

Our goal is to offer a peaceful transition for both you and your pet, which includes:

  • Travel to your home (distance restrictions apply, see below)

  • Medications and supplies to ensure a painless & peaceful process

  • Grief counseling during the appointment

  • If chosen, aftercare services and additional transport to a private pet crematorium

What to Expect

The Appointment Process

  • Arrival & Assessment:

    • Dr. Gabby will arrive at your home and assess your pet to ensure this service is appropriate.

    • She will explain the process in detail and answer any questions you may have.

  • Sedation:

    • A calming sedation injection (similar to a vaccine) will be given to relieve pain and ease anxiety.

    • This takes 2-15 minutes to take effect, allowing your pet to relax and lie down. Dr. Gabby recommends this occurs within the first 10 minutes of arrival.

  • Spending Time with Your Pet:

    • During the sedation time, you will have the opportunity to spend those final moments with your pet—holding, petting, and comforting them.

  • Final Injection:

    • Once your pet is ready, and you feel ready, Dr. Gabby will administer the final injection, which is painless and peaceful. This typically takes seconds to a minute.

    • Dr. Gabby will confirm your pet has passed and give you time alone with them, unless you prefer otherwise.

  • Aftercare:

    • If cremation is selected, Dr. Gabby will gently transport your pet to the crematory.

    • If your pet is over 50 lbs, she may ask for your help transferring them to the car or additional hired help may be required.

  • Pre-Medications (if applicable):

    • If you think your pet may need calming medications (i.e. gabapentin & trazodone) for behavioral concerns (e.g., anxiety, aggression, to sit still for sedation injection), please let us know ahead of time. They should be requested at your veterinary hospital but reach out if needing assistance.

How to prepare prior to arrival:

  • Discuss the Decision with Your Family:

    • Have a thorough discussion with your family about the decision ahead of time. If you're uncertain, consider scheduling an end-of-life consult first to ensure you're making the right choice.

  • Plan for Family Participation:

    • Discuss in advance who will be present and who would like to hold your pet, especially if young children will be involved. Emotions are high, so having a plan will help things go smoothly.

  • Say Your Goodbyes:

    • Take time to say your goodbyes and reminisce on memories before Dr. Gabby arrives. While she will provide time for this prior to the final injection, having this moment before she arrives helps avoid any rushed feelings during the process.

  • Choose a Comfortable Area:

    • Select a spot in or around your home where your pet feels comfortable. If weather permits, an outdoor area can be a peaceful option

  • Create a Calm Atmosphere:

    • Prepare your pet’s favorite foods/treats (meat, chocolate, ice cream, etc), toys, and calming music to help soothe them during this time.

  • Prepare for Other Pets:

    • If other pets will be present, make sure they are handled appropriately to avoid disruption. Dr. Gabby encourages family pets to come and sniff the deceased pet once they’ve passed. This helps them process the loss and understand that their furry companion has moved on.

  • Administer Pre-Medications (if applicable):

    • If prescribed, provide any calming medications (e.g., gabapentin, trazodone) at least 2-3 hours prior to the appointment.

    • It's also okay to offer a nice meal if your pet will eat that day.
